LG is set to introduce gaming monitors featuring a 480Hz OLED QHD screen later this year.

In 2024, OLED technology is making a strong push into the gaming realm, particularly focusing on achieving faster screen refresh rates. This capability is crucial for esports titles and high-frame-rate games such as Overwatch, League of Legends, and Call of Duty. Samsung and LG have recently announced their offerings, with Samsung unveiling a 32-inch 4K 240Hz and 27-inch QHD 360Hz OLED monitors, and LG introducing the dual-refresh UltraGear 32 OLED, supporting 4K at 240Hz and 1080p at an impressive 480Hz.

LG Display, responsible for screens in LG's monitors and TVs, is taking it a step further with the announcement of a 27-inch, 480Hz 2,560x1,440 OLED gaming display expected to launch by the end of June 2024. This follows their 240Hz 4K model from the previous year.

While some technologies have achieved even higher refresh rates, they often come with compromises such as limited resolution (1080p) and quality issues. OLED, known for its large color gamut, almost infinite contrast, and rapid pixel refresh of 0.03ms, has traditionally been limited to lower refresh rates. However, LG is introducing a microlens array layer called Meta Technology in its 480Hz panel to address this limitation.

The Meta Technology employs on-pixel microlenses to concentrate light, improving brightness and expanding the tonal range in darker areas of an image. This enhancement not only benefits gaming by providing clearer details in bright areas but also improves OLED's suitability for photo and video editing. Additionally, LG claims that the microlenses help minimize external light reflections during darker scenes, contributing to an overall improved viewing experience.

Samsung's Quantum Dot technology has been a solution to enhance tonal range in dark areas, but LG, as the pioneer of OLED, is introducing innovative approaches like Meta Technology to push the boundaries of OLED displays. This development signifies a significant step forward in OLED technology, offering gamers and content creators an enhanced visual experience.
